Hog Roast and Real Ale just some of the ingredients of the Great Notts Show

THE countdown to the Great Notts Show has begun – with hog roast and real ale for invited guests at a city pub.
Chefs, brewers and promoters were invited to the Cross Keys on Fletcher Gate as plans were revealed for this year’s showcase of all things great in Notts.

The show, which takes place in September, will fill Old Market Square with stalls featuring local food, drink and arts and crafts.
The show’s creator, Andy Whyles, said: “I’ve always thought the Notts food and culture scene has been very good but I really think it’s picked up over the past few years.
“I can’t think of a culture or nationality that isn’t represented here, whether it’s music, arts, crafts or food.
“It’s great to be a part of all that’s happening.”
The show will feature dozens of stalls in Old Market Square, all from Notts or featuring products made in the county.
There will be a beer tent with local ales, a live music stage and a kitchen featuring guest chefs – including Michelin-starred Adam Simmonds.
One of the guests at the launch, Steve Durham, is director of the Hospitality Sourcerer which supplies ingredients from the East Midlands to chefs and caterers across the UK.
He will be helping to run the live kitchen.
He said: “I really like working with the local community and local businesses.
“I think it’s a vibrant city, but I think the independent restaurants need more support like this.”
Catherine Winstanley runs Nottingham-based bakery, Simply Cakes.
She said she always did her best to get all her ingredients from Notts and local producers.
She said: “It’s always good produce and I’d rather get something from a local instead of from the other side of the world.
“This year’s show is going to be really good and I’m thrilled to have helped organise it.”
Making a surprise appearance towards the end of evening was Robin Hood, aka Ade Andrews.
He said: “It’s a great, cultural city; we should be promoting all the best we have to offer.
“I will, of course, be eating, drinking the finest mead and making merry in Old Market Square!”
The Great Notts Show takes place from Friday, September 27 to Sunday, September 29.
